British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver recently embarked upon

the culinary journey of a lifetime… He packed his bag and headed for America.

Apparently the TV chef has spent the summer travelling around the USA delving deep into the social issues and diverse cultures of 21st Century America.

This new six-part series is being shown on Channel 4 in the UK this autumn, and is being promoted as more than just a straightforward cooking and travel series. Jamie describes the programe as "...unpredictable, often challenging, but ultimately heart-warming and entertaining television." We shall see. Oh, and surprise surprise a book to accompany the series is published by Michael Joseph/Penguin just in time for Christmas.

One thing puzzles me greatly, why does Jamie feel the need to dress up as The Village People, YMCA style? Anyhow that appart, during the series Jamie offers to show us “America raw, uncut and without a guidebook…” His journey begins in the gang invested areas of East Los Angeles. He shows us people with a strong sense of community and some deep family values. He tells us that the love of food “…keeps them afloat.” Does it. Unfortunately Jamie never sticks to the food and often strays away from his subject. “Drugs has got so much to answer for.” Well, yes Jamie we know taht. Why the social comment? Stick to the cooking Jamie. In fact no Jamie, stick with the YMCA. Having seen the trailers for this programme I would like to apologise to all of my American foodie friends… Knob of English Lard. Sorry.
